DAY 5 - CLUNES to BALLARAT

From Clunes to Ballarat is mostly uphill, but the weather smiled on us today with a handy tailwind. We had a leisurely departure from our b & b, and followed the main road all the way in to Ballarat.

Packed up and ready to go

On the way out of Clunes we came across a plaque commemorating the famous Clunes anti-Chinese riot of 1873.

There was not much of interest to detain us on the way. We passed several sheep farms,  and a stall selling new season potatoes at $5 for 5kg. We resisted that particular temptation, and rode straight on to Ballarat.

Entering Ballarat, we headed for Lake Wendouree, where we stopped to admire some of the water birds.

We cycled along the lake shore until we found a place out of the wind (we enjoyed the tailwind while we were riding, but it was a bit chilly when we stopped) for a picnic.

Heading for our . . .

. . . Picnic spot
Refreshed from our rest stop, we continued around the lake, stopping only to examine the site of the 1956 Olympic Games rowing events, before checking in to our accommodation in Ballarat.

We spent the rest of the afternoon wandering the streets and seeing the sights of central Ballarat.
